About Us
The Cancer Control Council is responsible for making sure New Zealand’s Cancer Control Strategy is turned into action. The Council is an independent advisory bodyappointed by the Minister of Health. We give strategic advice directlyto the Minister as well as to the wider cancer control community.
The Council works with all the bodies involved in controlling cancer.Together we are entrusted with reducing both the incidence and impactof cancer in New Zealand and the inequalities that surround it.
The Council’s key tasks are to:
- monitor and review implementation of the Cancer Control Strategy
- provide independent strategic advice to the Minister of Health, the Director-General of Health, district health boards and non-government organisations on matters related to cancer control
- foster collaboration and co-operation between bodies involved in cancer control
- foster and support best practice in, and an evidence-based approach to, improvements in the effectiveness of cancer control
- set up links with overseas cancer control agencies.
The Council’s members are drawn from across the cancer controlfield — from primary prevention, screening and early detection throughto palliative care and research.
